HOUSE RULES

The Dartington Hall Trust Archive contains records that are unique and irreplaceable and we ask our visitors to abide by the following conditions of access. Please remember that appointments need to be made in advance to consult records.

  • Please do not mark the documents in any way, lean on them, or place your notebook on them. Only use pencil for taking notes.
  • The number of documents being consulted at any one time is at the discretion of the archivist on duty.
  • All records should be handled carefully and the original order of the documents should not be interfered with.
  • The gloves provided are to be used at all times when handling photographs and photograph albums.
  • Eating and drinking are not permitted in the building except by permission in designated areas.
  • Smoking is not permitted in the building.
  • Bags should be left in the office as indicated.
  • Mobile phones normally to be switched off.
  • At least 48 hours' notice is required for the production of documents stored in the storeroom.
  • No documents can be produced between 12.30 pm and 2.00 pm, when the Office normally closes for lunch, or within 30 minutes of closing time which is normally 5.15pm.
  • The use of hand-held scanners is not permitted.
  • No photography or tracing of the documents is permitted without the permission of the archivist on duty. A declaration is to be signed once permission for photocopying has been given. A charge will be made for photocopying, digital and photographic reproduction.
  • Any person wishing to publish a transcript or facsimile of any document or reproduction of a still image should make a request in writing to the archivist and, if permission is given, the appropriate declaration is to be signed and an acknowledgement to The Dartington Hall Trust Archive is to be included. The Trust maintains the right to levy a fee. In the event of publication, it is the responsibility of the user to obtain all necessary rights, releases or consents. A copy of the publication is to be deposited in the Archive.
  • The purpose of The Dartington Hall Trust Archive is to enable public access to the archives and bibliographic collections belonging to The Dartington Hall Trust. The Dartington Hall Trust has no knowledge or reason to believe that the Archive contains defamatory material. However, researchers should be aware that due to the extent of the Archive, it has not been possible for The Dartington Hall Trust to inspect every document that has been included in the catalogue. Inclusion of material in The Dartington Hall Trust Archive catalogue does not constitute an endorsement or an approval of the opinions or beliefs held by the authors or publishers of that material nor does it mean that the material is not defamatory. Should you discover what you consider may be defamatory material during your research, you should bring this immediately to the attention of the Archive by contacting the Archivist, giving full details of the material. In addition, should you receive any notification from a third party that material you have used from the Archive is or may be defamatory, you must immediately notify the Archivist giving full details of the complaint and the material to which it relates.
  • In the case of research by postgraduate students in connection with a dissertation/paper/thesis it is requested that a copy of the completed document be deposited in the Archive.
  • Photographs are displayed on-line for information purposes only and the necessary permissions are required before use. Every effort has been made to identify and contact the copyright holder. In those cases where the photographer is unknown and the photograph is outside of the copyright period, we have included the image. Should you discover what you consider may be a photograph of a known photographer, you should bring this immediately to the attention of the Archive by contacting the General Manager, giving full details. In addition, should you receive any notification from a third party relating to known photographers you should notify the General Manager giving full details of the photograph and photographer.

These terms and conditions are governed by and shall be construed in accordance with English law and are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English Courts
