DOROTHY ELMHIRST: STAFF
Description: Records relating to estate staff and servants, records of estate life during World War II, and staff activities including children's Christmas parties. Records also include policy and administrative materials; Estate Committee records and correspondence; lists of employees and children; estate housing; early household budget records; correspondence with estate employees and household staff. Includes correspondence with alien internees employed by the Dartington Hall estate including Kurt Jooss, Hein Heckroth, Willi Soukop, and Hans Oppenheim. Information on wartime conditions at Dartington and Totnes includes documents distributed by the Ministry of Information and written recollections of estate staff and trustees including Dorothy Elmhirst. Other material includes examples of Dorothy Elmhirst's speeches used in promoting Anglo-American co-operation during World War II. An important subseries includes primary information on approximately 300 child evacuees billeted locally and at Aller Park from 1940 through 1945. There is also material assembled by Philip Connolly, an evacuee himself at Dartington, together with his booklet 'Evacuees at Dartington 1940-1945'.
