LABORATORY RECORDS
J B Patterson in the Dartington Hall LaboratoryThe Dartington Hall Science Laboratory began in 1927 for the purposes of providing scientific education for pupils at the School, advising various Trust departments and officers in scientific matters, and critically evaluating the scientific viability of Trust enterprises. Early work included soil surveys of the estate, quality testing of bulk purchases, and daily weather recording and forecasting services. Before long the Laboratory was involved in testing new dyes for fabrics, paint testing, milk and juice testing, and analytical work for local health services. It undertook regional soil samples for the Government and consulted with a variety of local authorities and national corporations, before closing in 1946. Surviving records include reports, agricultural bulletins, weather records, and correspondence of the Laboratory's first scientist, Dr William Slater.
