Description: Papers (1920-1973) recording travel and personal contacts in China; the USSR; Africa; the Bahamas; Bhutan; Tibet; Sikkim; Burma; Canada; Ceylon; Iraq; Japan; Palestine; the Philippines; and the West Indies. The first two boxes relate to China and include correspondence with Hu Shih; Xu Zhimo; Shu-hua Ling Chen; and Madame Chiang Kai-shek (May-ling Soong).

Intourist brochure, tours to Russia 1932Correspondence with organisations working on behalf of China include papers of the Anglo-Chinese Development Society Ltd of London, which was set up to assist the Chinese Industrial Co-operative movement, and of which Leonard Elmhirst was a board member from 1943-1946.

Other papers relate to the USSR. There is correspondence (1942) with Ivan Maisky, Soviet ambassador, referring to Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst's stay at the White House and discussing diplomatic relations between America and the USSR.

Other materials include communist brochures and booklets. The Palestine folders include descriptive correspondence about life on a Jewish farm settlement in Palestine (afterwards Israel).
