The Withymead Centre at Exeter, Devon
The Withymead Centre for Remedial Education through Psychotherapy and the Arts, was founded by Gilbert and Irene Champernowne in 1942. Withymead was a Jungian psychotherapeutic centre and was one of the first art therapy centres in Britain. The centre offered self-discovery through expression in the arts including painting, pottery, music, movement, and drama. Leonard Elmhirst served as a trustee of the centre between 1949 and 1960. After his retirement as chairman of the Withymead Centre Trust, Leonard Elmhirst continued to advise and financially support the ongoing work of Withymead.
